The Florida Burrowing Owl

(5. cfloridana), which is found in Florida and in a very slight color-form in the adjacent Bahama Islands, differs from the western form in being smaller, though with larger bill and feet, and the spots above are white with little, if any, buff tinge, and the brown areas darker. Another form (S. c. dominicensis) is found on the island of Haiti or Santo Domingo, while what are regarded as distinct species are found on Antigua, Guadaloupe, Clarion Island off the coast of Lower California, and Margarita Island, Venezuela. That from the latter island, known as the Short-winged Burrowing Owl (5. brachyp-tera), is a small, very pale form, the color of which harmonizes perfectly with the faded yellowish grass surrounding their burrows; they feed on grasshoppers and beetles.
